Spite was the first game of the second year of TGA! We were tasked to do a Diablo clone.

It was the longest time we were given to a project and took in to account a pre-dev time. This year we were also put into groups, we had for the rest of the year.

I did some of the enemies, environment 3d animation and the intro cinematic.

Intro cinematic

In honour of Diablo’s stunning intro cinematics and having three animators, we decided to put considerable time into our own cinematic!

We wanted 2D so it could be aa one-man project as it could be. It was gonna be how our protagonist dies and swears vengeance against the Norns for giving her a non-warrior’s death!

Though I did the intro mostly solo, I always asked my group members for feed back and direction about creative choices.

We all loved the idea of her falling into the well and morphing into her string of fate being cut. It was enough for the story and setting up the antagonist. So the last part was cut.

Talked often to the graphics team about the art style and environment design of the cinematic. It had to fit the beautiful 3D graphics they were making.

I took inspiration from WoW animatics in how they used values and rendering style.

The backgrounds and characters were drawn in Procreate.

Wanted the freedom to have camera movement so I drew the picture big. It’s the first picture we see after clicking start, so it needed to have impact. It also needed to sell our protagonist and her personality.

I compostied all the assets and added camera effects in Clip Studio Paint. Animatied the cut and fall sequence in the CSP as well.

In DaVinci I added the sound effects. It was the first time I worked with sound. A lot of time was spent on finding the right sound and mixing it with others to create the right effect.
